Cold House

Mother, Adrienne and I stayed in Ft Sumner during the week to attend school and then returned to the ranch for the weekend. We left the ranch early Monday morning to go to town, when we got there the house was very cold, and it took forever for the kerosene stove to heat the house. Aunt Eddie, Shelia, and Donna and Carole stayed there for a time. I don’t know how long, but they went to school there.

Carol's Imagination

Carol was noted at school for her big imagination. She told her classmates that her uncle Adron had bears on his ranch.

 Library

Donna, Shelia and Carol really liked to go the library and read. They introduced Adrienne to the library.

Candy Store

We moved to Ft Sumner before I started to school. Even though I didn’t go to school, mother let me walk to school with the girls and buy candy at a store across from the school, with a nickel she tied in the corner of a handkerchief. I attended first and second grade in Ft Sumner.

Red Cross

Mother and Aunt Eddie went to the De Baca County Courthouse to help the Red Cross pack boxes of candy, gum and cigarettes for the World War ll soldiers.

House Fire

A house across the street from our house in Ft Sumner burned up one night. Adron and some neighborhood men tried to cut a hole in the wall and rescue the children inside. They were unsuccessful.
